Shire-Cross Sporthorses

Shires are often wrongly believed to be ‘just plow horses’, but indeed they are active, energetic movers, with exceptional grace for their size.  Their flash and flare has made them very popular for parades and promotional uses.  In the last several years, the desire for a larger, more even-tempered horse has created a powerful trend toward the use of shires and shire-crosses in almost every aspect of the equine world.  The crosses excel at all driving styles, and every English, and Western riding discipline imaginable.  Adding substance, bone and disposition, the Shire is rapidly becoming the desired draft horse for producing exceptional Sporthorses.

Shire-crosses are particularly adept at jumping and dressage.  In 1952, the jumper "Nizefela", a shire/thoroughbred-cross, won the gold medal at the Olympic games in Helsinki, and then followed up with a Bronze in Stockholm in 1956.  Nizefela is but one of the hundreds, perhaps thousands, of shire crosses that have gone to the top in their respective sports.  With the size and agility needed for serious competition, and the disposition and willingness to accomplish whatever their rider desires, these horses can help you to fulfill all of your equestrian ambitions!  Shire crosses can be registered in several different registries, including the English Shire Horse Society’s Shire-Cross registry, the American Shire Horse Association’s Shire-Sporthorse registry, and the American Warmblood Association. "Best Show Hunter in all of England" (left)

Another very well known horse resulting from crossing a Thoroughbred to a Shire is the horse called "Assurance" recognized as the best show hunter in all of England in 1982!  Assurance is a 1/4 Shire, standing 17.3, "but so well proportioned as to look smaller, and what a grand feel he gives. If I had to jump a line of 5 ft. gates, followed by a couple of the biggest oxers to be found, and then turn round and come back, this would be the horse for me."

Shire/TB crosses are in great demand now, as they usually carry the fluidness and agility of the TB, along with the added bone and size, with the calmer disposition of the shire. The cross with the heavy stallion on the light mare is the more popular cross in the US, as it will usually give you a heavier TB type horse. These horses are burning up the fields in dressage and hunter/jumper shows across the nation! The cross done the other way (light stallion on heavy mare) will, more often than not, give you more of a small draft horse.
